Liliha’s Gingerbread Festival 2011

Gingerbread festival 2011Representative Corinne Ching, founder of the Hawaii Heritage Caucus, hosted the 5th Annual Liliha Gingerbread Festival again.

According to Representative Ching, “We host this event to celebrate the holidays, but also to foster the children’s love of the community for we know what the children love they will care for.”

Friends and families are invited to purchase a gingerbread kit at the event and join in on the gingerbread house building competition. Children can play in snow, visit with Santa Claus, who will be hearing requests, listen to Christmas music, and enjoy a cocoa bar. Representative Corinne Ching also reads Christmas stories to the children.

The event is free and open to the public every year. There is a minimal fee for gingerbread kits. For more information call Rep. Ching’s office at 808-586-9415.

The 8th Annual “I LOVE LILIHA” Town Festival Sunday, August 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The 8th Annual “I LOVE LILIHA” Town Festival will proudly reconvene this year on Sunday, August 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each year the ever-popular block party gathers business leaders, vendors, healthcare providers, entertainers and government agencies together, joining hands with community residents to celebrate the spirit and heritage of Liliha-Nuuanu. Over the day’s course, last year’s event gathered approximately five-thousand attendees from within Liliha and beyond.

Sponsors such as Finance Factors, Liliha Bakery, and Longs Pharmacy have since 2004 allowed the Festival to offer free admission, which it will continue to provide this year. The Royal Hawaiian Band, annually delighting attendees with an hour’s show to start the day, will perpetuate it’s traditional invocation once again. Other features in the past have included a Chinese lion dance, belly dancing, and a lively Emcee; this year’s entertainment queue is also excited to welcome an oral historian who will recite tales of her experience growing up in the District.

“We are honored to have the sponsors we do to support the festival each year,” says Representative Corinne W. L. Ching, “‘I LOVE LILIHA’ is nothing if not individual gems of the community arriving at one place and time, to remind residents why they should be proud to call Liliha home.”

The event features fresh local produce, plant and flower sales, handmade arts and crafts from local artisans, live entertainment, a “Keiki Fun Zone” bounce house, health information and screenings, representatives from community organizations such as the FBI, Hawaii State Civil Defense and Neighborhood Boards, plus “A Taste of Liliha” featuring food sampling from Liliha neighborhood restaurants. Antique fire truck rides also highlight the experience each year for many.

The annual town festival offers a venue to showcase the many reasons one may rightly exclaim “I love Liliha!” Bring your beach umbrellas, mats & chairs, and spend the day! Free parking is also available.

The location for the 8th Annual event is at North Kuakini Street, the stretch Ewa of Liliha-Kuakini intersection, from Liliha Street to Nalanui Street (Liliha Bakery). For further information call Representative Ching’s office at 586-9415
